Training agents who request, and are approved by the committee to have a
youth apprentice may indenture youth apprentices. Youth Apprentices must
demonstrate career exploration competencies contained in a curriculum, approved
by the Oregon State Board of Education and be recommended by the participating
school. The program shall adhere to the same policies and guidelines as the
adult apprenticeship program with the following exceptions:
- A youth apprentice may enter the program without meeting the minimum
requirements of an adult apprentice (Diploma, GED, etc.). However, in no
case shall a youth apprentice displace an adult apprentice.
- The same ratio requirements apply to youth apprentices as is outlined in
this handbook for adult apprentices. However, Youth apprentices shall not be
included as a part of the adult ratio count. Youth apprentices will be
counted separately and concurrently. At no time shall the total number of
apprentices (youth and adult) exceed the total Journey persons for a
training agent or job.
- A Training Agent may have a youth apprentice program without concurrently
maintaining an adult apprenticeship program.
- Approved Training agents may be allowed only one youth apprentice without
training adult apprentices concurrently.
- Students participating in a youth apprenticeship program shall be in
DIRECT LINE-OF-SIGHT SUPERVISION of a Journeyman at all times.
- Training agents need to be aware of the maximum hour requirements with
regards to youth apprentices:
- Employment and School may not exceed 8 hours per day
- Employment may not exceed 20 hours per week while school is in session
Employment may not exceed 44 hours per week during breaks such as spring or
summer vacation.
